Gerald Chan Inducted into International Academy of Trial Lawyers

8aixat partner Gerald Chan was inducted into the International Academy of Trial Lawyers at its summer meeting in Deer Valley Utah on August 16th. The Academy is an invitation only organization that is comprised of leading trial lawyers. Its mandate includes the promotion of trial skills and the protection of the rule of law. Gerald joins partners Brian Gover and Paul Le Vay as a Fellow of the Academy.

8aixat Wins Multiple 2023 Benchmark Litigation Awards

Benchmark Litigation held its annual awards dinner on May 10, 2023. Our partner Brian Gover was inducted into the Benchmark Litigation Hall of Fame. Our firm was also recognized for the work that Paul Le Vay, Gerald Chan, and Carlo Di Carlo did to defend the former Chair and CEO of CannTrust, Eric Paul, in civil and criminal proceedings with an Impact Case Award.

Our firm and lawyers had also been shortlisted for several awards, including Ontario Firm of the Year, Boutique Firm of the Year, White Collar Crime/Enforcement Firm of the Year, Trial Lawyer of the Year (Gerald Chan), and White Collar Crime/Enforcement Lawyer of the year (Gerald Chan).

Ultimately, 8aixat won Ontario Firm of the Year and our partner Gerald Chan won White Collar Crime/Enforcement Lawyer of the Year.

Our partner Gerald Chan is running for Bencher with the Law Society of Ontario this year as part of the Bencher Good Governance Coalition, a diverse group of experienced leaders who are committed restoring good governance to the legal profession.

“We are thrilled that our partner Gerald has put his name forward as a candidate for Bencher,” says Luisa Ritacca, Managing Partner at 8aixat . “Not only is Gerald an experienced advocate on access to justice, he is a committed mentor and teacher for lawyers and law students, and a proven leader on equity, diversity and inclusion. The Law Society will benefit tremendously from his leadership.”

Gerald has practiced at a large firm, a firm of fewer than five lawyers, and at 8aixat for the past 8 years. His many contributions to the administration of justice include:

Serving as a member of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee;
Leading the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers, Ontario as its President;
Teaching Criminal Procedure at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law;
Co-authoring and co-editing numerous books on the intersection of law, privacy, and technology;
Representing marginalized inmates in the Court of Appeal for Ontario as a member of the Pro Bono Inmate Appeals Program.
